What is a PCB?

A Printed Circuit Board, PCB for short, is a circuit board that is made of materials such as, fibreglass, copper and plastic. A PCB uses connectors to power an electrical device by transporting electricity through thin copper wires in the board. PCBs are useful because without them, technology would not be what it is today and the devices we have would look a lot more different.  

What PCBs Are Used For

The 3 different types of PCBs are; a Single Layer, Double Layer and a Multilayer PCB.  Each of these is used for different devices, for example, a Single Layer PCB has only one layer and powers devices such as calculators, radio equipment and digital cameras as well as much more.

2 layers of circuit boards are used in a Double Layer PCB in total and this can be used to power electrical equipment such as; lights, vending machines and printers.

A Multilayer PCB’s is used to power more advanced electronic devices such as medical x-ray equipment, mobiles, laptops and TVs. Multilayer PCBs require 3 or more layers of a circuit board in order to function properly.

What Is A Rigid PCB?

A Rigid PCB’s is the name given to a PCB that is made up of solid materials and cannot bend easily and would, unfortunately, be broken if you bent it. Rigid PCBs are useful because they are made up of hard plastics and fibreglass – meaning they are more hardwearing. Rigid PCBs are used in electrical devices such as; TV’s, toys and other gadgets. As well as Rigid PCBs, you can find 3D Rigid-Flex PCBs and Rigid-Flex PCBs.

Flex Circuits

Flexible PCBs can be used for all kinds of PCB and are made from softer materials that can bend meaning they are not as easily broken as Rigid PCB’s. Smartphones, cameras, tablets and many other appliances can use Flexible PCBs and there are many benefits of doing so. Using a Flexible PCB is useful because;

  •    They are easy to install
  •    More malleable
  •    Can bend multiple ways
  •    Make devices weigh less

Overall, there are many reasons why PCBs are useful, for example, they are used to power electrical devices, can be made out of different materials and can be made in different sizes. Many of the important pieces of technology that we have today use these devices and so we are sure that these are going to continue to be made for many years.
